about us
- skreppa - old Icelandic verb - "scrap-uh"
- - to slip away, absent oneself, to pay a fleeting visit, to run off for a little while
Skreppa was founded by Billy, having long been an outdoor enthusiast. from skiing, to climbing, to camping - anything outdoors, he was there.
Being a technically-minded person, Billy was always on the hunt for new gear - appreciating the processes that go into making some of the amazing equipment available on the market today. being fortunate enough to be in a position to afford most things, he still wondered why it cost so much. so one evening, whilst camped out in a lay-by on Lynn Ogwen, he had a brainwave: a new equipment supplier, focussed on supplying high-end equipment at middle-market prices. this would go on to become Skreppa.
Skreppa was founded on three core beliefs:
- the outdoors is for everyone, not just those that can afford it.
- expensive gear is usually better than cheap gear.
- expensive gear isn't always 'worth it'.
With these three points in mind, we set about finding a way to offer gear with features that usually push the price range higher at a lower cost. by this, we mean that you should be able to buy high-quality equipment for less than it's traditionally sold for.
This seems like a lofty goal, when considering the amount of research and design that has gone and continues to go into both camping and mountaineering kit.
Billy has a background in motorsport engineering - something with a surprising amount of knowledge overlap with the gear we have come to produce. namely - carbon fibre, aluminium, titanium, exotic textiles and their associated materials science and manufacturing processes.
So we set out, looking at inneficiencies in the current market, the manufacturing processes involved in producing gear, and what was missing.
What we found was a considerable gap between 'cheap and cheerful' and high-end equipment. normally, when a high-end product is being brought to market, this brings with it a large amount of R&D cost - new features, materials and processes need to be brought to bear. this in turn leads to an increased retail price.
what Skreppa stands to acheive is to:
- leverage existing manufacturing processes from other industries and apply them to the camping/mountaineering equipment market.
- bring outside industry expertise to the camping equipment market, leveraging case-by case manufacturing techniques, optimisations and efficiencies this brings.
- bring new manufacturing methods, supply chains and knowledge to the industry.
These key points alone will see us achieve our goals.
We can't wait for you to be there with us when we do.
